Product Description
Mahal and Saltanabad rugs are often mistaken for one-another, and the terms are sometimes used (incorrectly) interchangeably. The latter are from the Arak region, while Mahal rugs hail from Mahallat, about 150 kilometers west. Both feature large-scale patterns with less formal designs than other types of Persian rugs. Designs are neither entirely geometric, nor entirely curvilinear, which makes them somewhat unique among oriental carpets.
Near the turn of the century, a new style of Mahal was created by the venture capitalist firm Ziegler & Co. of Manchester, England. These Mahals, which are today known as “Zieglers,” were specifically commissioned for resale in English and French markets. They are characterized by higher knot density, thinner fabric, and patterns that are notable for their obvious English influence.
